Managing a social presence these days can be difficult. It’s even harder for those experimenting with the new wave of Twitter-like services, like Mastodon, OUR And Blue sky, where staying active means a lot of duplicate posts on different networks. Fortunately, developers are starting to respond to our need for cross-posting tools. In addition to planning services like Fedica And Postponethere is now a new application, Remarkswhich allows you to publish to Mastodon, Nostr and Bluesky from a single interface.
While waiting for the launch of multi-service social networks and news trackers, like Tapestry, Nootti’s iOS app can at least save you some effort when you want to share a post with your followers on three of the most popular Twitter/X alternatives. Plus, using Apple’s native “Share via…” option, you can post that same message to any other apps you want, like X or Meta’s Threads. (A clever workaround given Threads API is not yet open and X is too expensive for independent developers.)
Remarks, whose Finnish name means “note,” is quite simple. It won’t offer all the features related to posting directly on the platforms themselves, like the ability to add polls and alt text on images, or get hashtag suggestions, like on Mastodon. However, if you have a simple text (or text plus media) post, Nootti can handle it. As you type in the text entry box, Nootti counts how many characters you have left. You can also upload media from your camera roll, if you want, then tap the envelope icon to send the message.
To use Nootti, you will first need to configure your accounts in Settings. (Note that you can use an application password for Bluesky, instead of your master password, even if this option is not specified in the application.)
What makes Nootti compelling is that you can easily customize each post slightly for the different platforms. To do this, you first type your post in the “Main” tab, then move on to the tabs of other social networks. The message will automatically populate on each tab, but you can change the message for individual networks. For example, you could take a more playful look with your posts on Bluesky, while adding hashtags to your posts on Mastodon. When you tap the envelope icon, the custom set of messages are published to all three networks simultaneously.
Developer Petri Kajander says he built Nootti for himself.
“The current state of social media is one of defragmentation and, if you wait, it won’t change the status quo. You have to be active to be part of the change,” he says. “A lot of people have stopped posting altogether or are only in one place. This means you need to expand your presence to multiple locations but that takes too much time. Since neither network is a clear winner, the best strategy is to post to multiple places, but maintain local engagement on that network and also personalize each post on each platform,” adds Kajander.
He explains that he doesn’t believe in auto-posting either, which is why he wanted an app that requires you to write your own posts.
Notes is a free download from the App Storebut Kajander is currently developing the paid version, he says, although he hasn’t yet determined what revenue model it will use.
Kajander said he also hasn’t made a decision about whether it will support other networks, like Threads, or even whether it would be necessary, once it becomes a federated app using the ActivityPub protocol. Meanwhile, you can cross-post to any other app with the share button in Nootti.
